Why is tire pressure so important?

Making sure you keep your tires inflated to an appropriate level is important to your vehicle's overall health. If your tires are underinflated, the outer tread on your tire tends to wear out faster and it adds stress to your suspension, making it more difficult to maintain control of your vehicle. If your tires are overinflated, you wear out the inner tread faster, making them more susceptible to pop. Both of these extremes shorten the life of your tires, causing you more money and stress. Tire pressure is calculated using a measurement called pounds per square inch, or PSI. PSI is based on your vehicle's weight and size, towing capacity and recommended tire size. The most accurate readings for tire pressure are done when your tires are cold or when you haven't driven in several hours. Checking your tire pressure after large temperatures changes occur is important too, especially when temperatures rise.

How do I check the tire pressure in my Grand Cherokee?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a recommended tire size of 265/50R20 107 T. The recommended tire pressure for that size is 33 PSI for the front tires and 36 PSI for the rear tires. To check your tire pressure, follow these steps:
  1. Remove the end caps on your tires' air valves and put in a safe place
  2. Place the tire pressure gauge into the valve stem and press down to get a reading
  3. Compare the valve reading to your Grand Cherokee's recommended tire pressure of 33 PSI for the front tires and 36 PSI for the rear tires
    • If the reading is above the recommended level, put in the valve to let out some air
    • If the reading is below the recommended level, fill your tire with air until you reach the appropriate reading
  4. Replace the end caps on your tires' air valves
