However, to traverse the many waterways of Wisconsin safely, it is important to remember to acquire and maintain a boating license. This process can be a tad confusing to both newcomers and veterans of Wisconsin's water, but with a little help the process can be painless. The first thing to discuss when talking about boating licenses in Wisconsin is the fact that if you were born before January 1st 1988, you do not need a license to operate a boat on any of Wisconsin's waterways. Unfortunately for the Generations X and Y boaters out there, you will have to go through the process of taking both a safety course and registering. The easiest way to do both of those things is to peruse the internet and find any of the recognized boating associations that run DNR sanctioned programs for boat safety programs. These will take you through all of the state mandated information, as well as getting you ready to safely operate a boat in Wisconsin. This course will culminate in all of the paper work being done and your new license being sent right to your home. Easy peasy right? "Born Before 1988? You don't need one!" If doing the course in your home does not sound like your preferred option, you may also contact the DNR and find when they are offering physical classes. These typically occur in the spring months so new boaters may enjoy the summer on the water, but classes also happen throughout the year. The Parade: This is a big deal! It's a great family event and a fantastic way to show appreciation for your community! The parade starts at 8:30AM on Saturday July 4th. It begins on Goold and Main Streets (on the north side of Racine!). It's best to get there early to get the perfect seat! Traffic is blocked from the area starting at 7am, so don't plan on cutting through! There are a few rules to remember at the parade: No Silly String! So much time and money goes into the fireworks show each year, so make sure to come down and see it! The fireworks will start at dusk on July 4th (around 9:20pm) Sitting anywhere along the shore of Lake Michigan near Racine is a great place to watch the fireworks, but it's said that the prime watching spots are close to North Beach. When is the Milwaukee Holiday Parade 2014? Here in Racine, we get into the holiday spirit nice and early. That's why our own holiday parade for 2014 is already done and over with (don't worry -- there are still plenty of highly festive community events around the bend in case you missed it!) If you're looking for an even bigger parade to attend now that your appetite for festive holiday events has been thoroughly whetted, it may be worth your while to head on up to Milwaukee to participate in their festivities as well. So, when is the Milwaukee Holiday Parade 2014? Where is it? What else is there to know about it? We've got all the details for you right here! more We'll start with the date and time so you can clear your calendar: The Milwaukee Holiday Parade 2014 takes place on Saturday November 22, and it begins at 9:30am. That's the Saturday before Thanksgiving, so it won't interrupt your big shopping weekend one bit! Next up, of course, is the location: The parade is going to start on Kilbourn Avenue & Astor Street, moving west to Old World 3rd Street and there it'll turn left and make its way south to Wisconsin Avenue. The parade concludes in front of The Shops of Grand Avenue, which right on the corner of Old World 3rd Street and Wisconsin Avenue. The next item of business, of course, is where to park your car. Here's a comprehensive parking map for the city of Milwaukee -- otherwise come extra early, grab a spot at The Shops at Grand Avenue, and grab breakfast before parade! What to bring? Well, in addition to plenty of warm clothes for what'll undoubtedly be a chilly Wisconsin morning, everyone is encouraged to bring as much non-perishable food items as your little mittens can carry -- shopping carts manned by Johnson Controls volunteers will be on hand to collect all the goods, which will benefit Hunger Task Force's Food for Families. Racine Trick or Treat 2014 Halloween is almost here, and if you've got kids that means one very important thing: Trick or Treating! Yes, it's that time of year when the young people dress up like their favorite Disney character or animal or monster and go all around the neighborhood asking for candy. A strange ritual to outsiders, maybe, but for us it's just the grand tradition of Halloween! So, when is the Racine Trick or Treat 2014? We'll let you know, along with a few tips to keep health in perspective during these sugar-laden days. more Too much of a good thing can be... not that good. Alright, so when is the Racine Trick or Treating going to take place for 2014? It'll be held on Halloween day (10/31) this year, which falls on a Friday, and will take place from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. During this time, take your trick-or-treaters around your own or another neighborhood (maybe you've already scoped out which areas have the opportunities in previous years!) and enjoy an evening of costumes and candy. Speaking of candy... are you a little concerned about the sugar rush, sugar crash, and sick stomachs that tend to result from the annual candy gorge that is Halloween? We'll give you some tips for keeping it in check.   Safety tip: Add reflective tape to dark costumes while Trick or Treating! First of all, we might be crazy but we think a single all-out candy binge -- perhaps the evening of the 31st after getting home to check over and sort out all the candy -- is acceptable. It's a sort of rite of passage, and one that seems to bear repeating year after year. From that point on, though, it's perfectly okay to ration candy for kids who will mow it all down in a few day's time no matter what the quantity. Be sure to serve extra-healthy meals and snacks during the Halloween fallout to counter all the candy consumption. Also, don't forget important hygiene practices like hand-washing and teeth-brushing -- they're especially crucial with all contact with strangers and sugar consumption. Regular admission will be $49, which includes general admission, a Fest pint glass, and of course, unlimited sampling of the brews on tap! So whos' brewin' it up for this thing? Racine Memorial Day Parade 2014 Wondering what’s going on in our area this 2014 Memorial Day? Today we bring you information like time, date and location for the Racine Memorial Day Parade 2014 so that you can plan your day around that community highlight. Then we’ll make some other suggestions for ways to spend the rest of this great day off with your family and friends. more Best seat in the house for parade watching: Dad's shoulders. First up, here’s all the information you need to know for the Racine Memorial Day Parade, sponsored and organized by the Racine Area Veterans Council: What: Parade and memorial ceremony When: The parade will be on Monday, May 26th and will begin at 10:00am. The ceremony will start shortly after 11:00am and is expected to end at about noon. Where: Parade begins at West Boulevard and Washington Avenue. The ceremony, which we highly recommend that you also attend, will take place at Graceland Cemetery’s Veterans Memorial. So, how do you spend the rest of your Memorial Day in the Racine area after the parade? If you’ve got kids, you can’t go wrong with a ChocolateFest! That’s right –  head on over to Burlington (680 Maryland Avenue off of Highway 36) for this huge and delicious event. It’s actually a four-day event, but the Memorial Day portion wraps up the event and lasts from noon-8:00pm. Thanks to all who have served Not much of a chocolate eater? Go check out some live music by The Mania from 2pm-6pm at Beachside Oasis on the lakefront. Or maybe you just can’t get enough of parades –  you’re in luck! Milwaukee’s parade, which starts from W. Wells and N. 4th Street, doesn’t start until 2pm. So grab some lunch after the parade here in Racine and head up for another one! Or maybe you’d rather go down to the Farmer’s Market in Sturtevant in the morning and then do the Milwaukee parade in the afternoon. Run, dance, and enjoy yourself as your make your way through this colorful course. Sign up as a team of four or more to save on registration. Start at Pershing Park - start-line window opens up at 9:00am with waves of participants starting every few minutes. Should be a great time! Everyone loves a Color Run! May 31, 2014 - The Cree Cruise 5K Run & Walk - This family-friendly event is on Saturday the 31st and starts at 9201 Washington Avenue. Racine Outdoor Fun Lake Michigan's Beauty The winter that would never end has finally concluded.  It is the time to go out and about, it is time to do things.  Many people have to go far and wide, hopping on planes and trains to ease their cravings for adventure.  But that is not the case here. In Racine outdoor fun can be had quite easily.  There are also a number of interesting, exciting places to visit that are just a short drive away.  Here are some of the cool things that can be done in our very own backyard. more Enjoy the Wildlife at the Racine Zoo When the weather’s nice… We go out and enjoy the great outdoors.  We are Wisconsinites after all.  Racine’s a treasure trove of activities to do in nature.  The scenic backdrop is ideal for hiking, picnicking, canoeing, and camping.  Spend some time along the Lake Michigan shore. Whether you fish or simply walk along the picturesque beaches, you cannot lose.  Many people have to go quite a ways to  enjoy such a treasure.  For you, it’s only a short drive. Frank Lloyd Wright on Display in Racine Of architectural significance Perhaps no architect is more well known than Frank Lloyd Wright.  His construction of the Johnson Wax Headquarters (of the SC Johnson & Son company) is situated at 1525 Howe Street.  Stop by for a short visit and a tour to learn more about the history of the building and the man himself. Zoo time fun For those with more than a “plus 1”, we have all sorts of family-friendly excursions for you. Take a ride over to the Racine Zoo.  Over 100 animals and a prime lakefront location, there is no shortage of wonderment.  On Saturdays from 10 AM to 11:30 AM, have your youngsters partake in Critter Corner, a fun, educational program at the zoo.
